    Nucleon-nucleon potential in finite nuclei

    Get PDF
We consider the spin-isospin-independent central part of the residual nucleon-nucleon potential in finite spherical nuclei taking into account the deformation effects of the nucleons within the surrounding nuclear environment. It is shown that inside the nucleus the short-range repulsive contribution of the potential is increased and the intermediate attraction is decreased. We identify the growth of the radial component of the spin-isospin independent short-range part of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon interaction as the responsible agent that prevents the radial collapse of the nucleus.Comment: 9 pages, 3 eps figure

Looking for the S-Z Effect towards Distant ROSAT Clusters of Galaxies

We report on observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect towards X-ray ROSAT clusters taken with a double channel (1.2 and 2 mm) photometer installed at the focus of the 15m SEST antenna in Chile. This paper describes the first results obtained for the high-z clusters S1077, A2744 and S295. Marginal detections were found for A2744 and at 1 mm for S1077. We discuss these data in terms of contamination of sources along the line of sight and give a constraint on the amplitude of the kinematic effect.Comment: 17 pg Latex file (using aasms4.sty) gzip'd tar'd uuencoded file including 1 ps figure, ApJ Letter in pres

First observations with CONDOR, a 1.5 THz heterodyne receiver

The THz atmospheric windows centered at roughly 1.3 and 1.5~THz, contain numerous spectral lines of astronomical importance, including three high-J CO lines, the N+ line at 205 microns, and the ground transition of para-H2D+. The CO lines are tracers of hot (several 100K), dense gas; N+ is a cooling line of diffuse, ionized gas; the H2D+ line is a non-depleting tracer of cold (~20K), dense gas. As the THz lines benefit the study of diverse phenomena (from high-mass star-forming regions to the WIM to cold prestellar cores), we have built the CO N+ Deuterium Observations Receiver (CONDOR) to further explore the THz windows by ground-based observations. CONDOR was designed to be used at the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) and Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). CONDOR was installed at the APEX telescope and test observations were made to characterize the instrument. The combination of CONDOR on APEX successfully detected THz radiation from astronomical sources. CONDOR operated with typical Trec=1600K and spectral Allan variance times of 30s. CONDOR's first light observations of CO 13-12 emission from the hot core Orion FIR4 (= OMC1 South) revealed a narrow line with T(MB) = 210K and delta(V)=5.4km/s. A search for N+ emission from the ionization front of the Orion Bar resulted in a non-detection. The successful deployment of CONDOR at APEX demonstrates the potential for making observations at THz frequencies from ground-based facilities.Comment: 4 pages + list of objects, 3 figures, to be published in A&A special APEX issu

Improved estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by comparison of eGFRcystatin C and eGFRcreatinine

Objective. GFR-prediction equations based upon cystatin C and creatinine have better diagnostic performance in estimating GFR than equations based upon only one of the two markers. The present work concerns in what way a comparison between separate estimations of GFR based upon cystatin C (eGFR(cystatin C)) or creatinine (eGFR(creatinine)) can be used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a combined cystatin C-and creatinine-based estimation of GFR. Methods. The difference between eGFR(cystatin C) and eGFR(creatinine) was compared with measured GFR (iohexol clearance) and a combined cystatin C- and creatinine-based estimation of GFR in a Swedish-Caucasian cohort of 857 adult patients. Results. A difference between eGFR(cystatin C) and eGFR(creatinine) of >= 40% indicated a markedly reduced diagnostic performance of the combined cystatin C- and creatinine-based estimation of GFR. Conclusion. Comparison of the agreement between eGFR(cystatin C) and eGFR(creatinine) can be used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of combined cystatin C-and creatinine-based estimations of GFR. If 'threshold values' for discordance are exceeded, it must be considered whether the clinical context requires the use of an invasive gold standard method to measure GFR. In some clinical contexts either creatinine or cystatin C are known to be invalidated as markers of GFR and in these situations the use of only the cystatin C-or the creatinine-based GFR estimate should be considered when the 'threshold values' are exceeded

G331.512-0.103:An Interstellar Laboratory for Molecular Synthesis. I. the Ortho-to-para Ratios for CH3OH and CH3CN

Spectral line surveys reveal rich molecular reservoirs in G331.512-0.103, a compact radio source in the center of an energetic molecular outflow. In this first work, we analyse the physical conditions of the source by means of CH3_3OH and CH3_3CN. The observations were performed with the APEX telescope. Six different system configurations were defined to cover most of the band within (292-356) GHz; as a consequence we detected a forest of lines towards the central core. A total of 70 lines of A/EA/E-CH3_3OH and A/EA/E-CH3_3CN were analysed, including torsionally excited transitions of CH3_3OH (νt\nu_t=1). In a search for all the isotopologues, we identified transitions of 13^{13}CH3_3OH. The physical conditions were derived considering collisional and radiative processes. We found common temperatures for each AA and EE symmetry of CH3_3OH and CH3_3CN; the derived column densities indicate an A/EA/E equilibrated ratio for both tracers. The results reveal that CH3_3CN and CH3_3OH trace a hot and cold component with TkT_k \sim 141 K and TkT_k \sim 74 K, respectively. In agreement with previous ALMA observations, the models show that the emission region is compact (\lesssim 5.5 arcsec) with gas density nn(H2_2)=(0.7-1) ×\times 107^7 cm3^{-3}. The CH3_3OH/CH3_3CN abundance ratio and the evidences for pre-biotic and complex organic molecules suggest a rich and active chemistry towards G331.512-0.103.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables. We report a case of Scedosporium apiospermum mold causing ear infection, central skull base osteomyelitis and finally, occlusion of carotid artery in a 48-year-old diabetic man. The exact diagnosis was established and the severity of the disease understood several months after the onset of symptoms. Despite of appropriate antifungal therapy, and repeated surgical and otological procedures, the infection progressed to fatal cerebral infarction
